Converting Data to ALE for import of EDL's to Liquid

The following Database and Example ALE files are available for download. Click on ALE.ZIP.  Keep in mind that there are other ways to accomplish this list but the Database I've set up removes the possibility for input errors because the time code fields are formatted to to automatically produce seperators in the form of colons and commas in the proper numerical format for DV video.  These files may be used free of charge, curtesy of Andy Stevens and Ulti-Media LLC.  I would like to thank David Clarke for his able assistance and input as well.  Thank you David....
Step one... Enter your information in the Database.  Begin by clicking on the button: "Video data entry"
You will be provided by a data entry form... enter your EDL here.  Keep in mind that the Act and Scene will be combined later to make the "Title" entry in your "ALE" file, there for it is a good idea to use a name that makes sense and will be remembered but unique enough to be able to sort but it late in the process. This can be any name you choose.  For this example, I've chosen "Pain". Therefore the final naming conjecture will be "Pain-01", "Pain-02", etc.  You certainly don't want your database to contain one set of names "Names".

Following your data entry, you will choose "EDL Query by Client".

Then input the following information in each of the requesters....

After to above entries you will be presented with the following information.  Highlight it as below

Open up Microsoft Word and past the information into the open document, as below.  Highlight the top two rows and delete them from the document.

After deleting the top two rows, highlight the entire document, then choose from the following options under the "Tools" menu.  I have found that it is best to spread the columns manually to suit before proceeding with this step.  However for teaching, this will suffice.

Once the conversion takes place and prior to proceeding with the next step, we will replace the "Tab" space between "Pain" in the first column and the "Identifier" number in the second column by choosing "Edit" and "Replace"

This will bring up the following requester.  Enter the word "Pain" as in the first column followed by the "tab character" which can be inserted by choosing the "Special" button at the bottom of the requester and selecting the "Tab"

Once the "Replace All" button is clicked, the first two columns no longer separated by a tab,  will join into one column to be used in the EDL name list.... Highlight the entire "EDL"  content group you have create and use "Control-C" or the copy command from the menu.

Note:  This is extremely important!  Use the Notepad editor to open the Example ALE file!

Open the "Example. ALE" file provided and set the cursor down directly below "Data".  Use the keyboard command, "Control-V" to paste the data into the "ALE" file.  Depending on your geography, the VIDEO_FORMAT  and FPS may require changes to PAL and 25.

Save the completed ALE file.  It can now be opened in Liquid using the "File - Import", by navigating to the file location and choosing ALE from  the drop down menu choice.  Your files will now be included in a "new" rack and folder using the name you have originally given the ALE file.

Ignore the missing columns provided as much of the information will be filled in automatically once the capture process is completed.  The database can be expanded and changed to incorporate the remaining fields.

Remembering : Although this seems like a lengthy explanation, it is quickly and simply accomplished.  The use of the database for data entry will save many headaches in the long run as it can be sorted by different fields, such as the time in field, which will allow you to check the time out with the following time in, etc.  Simply, it allows for a lot of error checking and input prior to committing the EDL.
